About Swaziland
Swaziland offers stunning mountain ranges, valleys dotted with mud huts and lush sugarcane fields for its people who enjoy peace. However, despite political rest, AIDS/HIV has devastated the country and it has endured a prolonged economic decline. Two-thirds of citizens still live on less than a dollar a day. Nearly 25% of the population require food aid and the unemployment rate is a staggering 30%.
Despite its stark economic prospects, Swazi’s 43% HIV/AIDS rate is the real crisis as it leaves a burgeoning orphan population in its wake. By 2010, there will be 120,000 orphans throughout the country. This epidemic holds untold misery and suffering for children, families and communities. The Swazi nation needs help, hope and a way to rebuild. We see promise in the community of Bulembu.
