Planet

The Bulembu community has inherited a number of environmental concerns, resulting from decades of mining operations which showed little regard for the environment. As part of the overall mission of Bulembu to transform lives and the economy, it is now necessary to care for the environment.

The current sewage system is rundown and is no longer in working order - therefore spilling raw sewage into the local community river. The water purification system no longer functions properly, exposing the community to parasites and diseases from drinking water from rusted asbestos pipes. However, the Jim Pattison Foundation in 2007 underwrote necessary funds to rehabilitate both the sewage and water systems which are set to be completed by 2010.

Lastly, the left over Asbestos mine tailings on the property are in desperate need of being rehabilitated. Known in the community as the "Bulembu Scar", not only are the dump sites an eye-soar they are potentially unsafe for residents. Download our Rehabilitation Overview and find out more. We encourage you to invest into the environmental sustainability of Bulembu and to help us be wise stewards of our PLANET. Click here to donate.
